Faced with worsening climate change and intensifying demand for minerals critical to the
energy transition, mining has been expanding its operations in countries of the global south.
Based on the justification of sustainable development, a series of socio-environmental impacts
are falling on sacrificial territories. This article analyzes, under the Marxist dependency
theory approach, the effects of lithium mining in Minas Gerais, Brazil’s largest lithium
reserve.
