This article analyses the third phase of negotiations for a trade agreement between the
European Union (EU) and Mercosur from the European context, with a focus on Germany’s
position. It employs an approach centred on the EU’s political and economic orientation,
which conditions its international engagement. The choice of the theme serves as a case
to present the EU’s attempt to respond to the developments of the euro crisis, the impact
of China’s rise, the new policies in the USA, the aftermath of the pandemic, and Russia’s
invasion of Ukraine.
