Abstract

The article analyzes the self-images constructed by the Brazilian government for two 19th
century Universal Exhibitions (Paris 1889 and Saint Louis 1904). It seeks to understand the
content and interests of these self-images propagated in these events, the first occurring
during the Empire and the second during the Brazilian republican period. The work agrees
that these participations were a proto public diplomacy used to improve Brazil’s international
image. Through the primary qualitative bibliographic and documentary analysis, four
areas were established: political, modernity, economic and racial. Of the four, only the
politician presented amendments. Despite changes in foreign policy, in the other axes, the
maintenance of images was observed.
