Abstract

The relevance of think tanks (TTs) is mainly related to their ability to influence decision-making in international politics. In the United States these institutes (called “advocacy TTs”) have a notable role in public policy-making, both domestically and
internationally. This article aims to analyze the role of North American TTs in the Kyoto Protocol negotiations. It is concluded that the role of the main conservative think tanks financed by the oil industry took place both internally (mainly via actions in the US Congress) and externally (via propagation of uncertainty regarding the anthropic nature of climate change).
