Resumo

Chinese claims over the South China Sea, a decisive issue in the international scenario of the 21st century, are perceived by some IR scholars as one of the country’s threats to international peace and security. The analysis of official documents published by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to justify the country’s position on the SCS, however, revealed a sophisticated legal strategy that challenges this view. By focusing on cartographic, historical, and linguistic evidence to validate its claims, China seems to pursue an international law-based trustbuilding strategy through an alternative concept of legality.
